Transparent GS plexiglass is a crystal-clear plastic sheet with high light transmission and a neat finish. The material closely resembles glass, but is considerably lighter in weight and more impact-resistant. As a result, it is often chosen for applications where a clear view is important, but where glass is less practical.

What is GS plexiglass?

Plexiglas is also known as acrylic or PMMA. It is a transparent plastic that is widely used as an alternative to glass. There are two types of Plexiglas: cast (GS) and extruded (XT).

With transparent GS plexiglass, liquid acrylic resin is cast between sheets of glass. This process produces a stress-free sheet with a very clear structure. This makes this variant well-suited to applications where the surface remains visible or where further processing is required. The difference between GS and Plexiglas XT lies mainly in the production process and workability. Cast acrylic is generally easier to mill, engrave and polish, and often has a superior optical quality.

 

 

Properties of transparent plexiglass

A transparent sheet of plexiglass is chosen when clear visibility, a neat finish and a long service life are important. Thanks to these properties, plexiglass remains clear for a long time when used outdoors and is suitable for applications where glass is too heavy or too fragile. The main advantages of plexiglass are:

  • Up to around 30 times stronger than traditional glass
  • UV-resistant and weather-resistant

What is transparent GS plexiglass used for?

Thanks to its combination of clarity, strength and light weight, plexiglass is widely used in a variety of projects. Both private individuals and businesses use the material as a safe and lightweight alternative to glass.

Common applications include secondary glazing, display cases, displays, windscreens and protective panels. Plexiglas is also frequently used in furniture, interior fittings and advertising panels because it can be finished to a high standard. In addition, plexiglass is regularly used in technical environments, for example as machine guards or transparent panels in structures.

Cutting and assembling plexiglass

Plexiglas is easy to work with using standard tools for plastic or wood. Sawing, drilling and milling are perfectly possible if you use the right tools and work carefully. When installing, it is important to take into account expansion caused by temperature differences. Therefore, always leave sufficient space around the sheet when fixing it into a frame or profile. When cleaning, preferably use a soft cloth and a mild cleaning agent. Abrasive agents can damage the surface
