PET felt: acoustic felt
PET felt or PET felt is a durable and versatile material that offers great acoustic performance. This material is warm, durable, soft, breathable, water- and dirt-repellent, insulating, sound-damping and combines beautifully with other materials. Clearly, we use the material in our acoustic products because of its looks as well as its acoustic properties. The felt boards in our range are 9mm / 18mm / 25mm thick
How is PET felt made?
But what is PET felt made of? PET felt is a soft but sturdy felt made from recycled PET. PET is the kind of plastic you find in water bottles or soft drink bottles. At the end of its life, you can recycle PET felt again to make acoustic felt. It is a sustainable type of material extracted from recycled PET bottles. Fibres are made from the PET bottles, these fibres are laid in the same direction. Then a felting machine felts the fibres by friction, resulting in the PET Filt material. We then use the panels for acoustic purposes.
What is acoustic felt and how does it work?
Acoustic felt made of PET consists of fibres made of polyester. Much of these fibres come from old PET bottles. By pressing layers of fibres together, you get a pressed felt panel. This way, you get a thick felt with a hard and solid structure that we use to make beautiful solutions. Profivilt panels significantly improve acoustics, which has been tested based on the NRC values. This stands for Reverberation Reduction Coefficient. The NRC value shows how the felt boards score on sound absorption, the higher the value, the better the absorption.
From cutting to sawing
Profivilt sheets are very easy to saw to size. This is best done with traditional tools, such as: a jigsaw or circular saw or a sharp knife and rule. The panels are also suitable for CNC cutting, CNC milling, v-cut, drilling and screwing.
How to assemble Profivilt PET felt sheets?
We can imagine that you are wondering how to mount these sheets correctly. You can mount the PET felt for acoustic purposes in various ways. Think of a slatted or hooked lath, or by gluing the felt boards to the wall.
Mounted against a latticework
If the felt boards are mounted using a wooden or metal frame, an air cavity is created between the board and the structural wall. This cavity contributes to significantly higher sound absorption values.
Gluing to the wall
Profivilt can easily be bonded with a "high-quality and fast-curing MS polymer-based adhesive sealant with extremely high and immediate initial adhesion" (type Parabond 800 or equivalent). This can be done directly on a fully even and plumb wall or as a false wall on a single or double-fitted wooden battening or on metal stud structure.
Using a hook lath
Profivilt can easily be mounted using rear-mounted mounting battens (hook battens) that are screwed to the back of the board. The counter batten is fitted into the fitted single or double battening.
Filling with an acoustic wool
It is also possible to fill with an acoustic wool such as ClimaWool. ClimaWool is an acoustic/thermal polyester wool that ensures that the αw values of the board become even higher and, consequently, the acoustic result is even more optimal.
