Have you ever heard of HPL? You may not have, but it is actually one of the most commonly used types of sheet material. HPL<\/a> is the abbreviation for High-Pressure Laminate. This compressed sheet material can be used for all sorts of applications. We explain what HPL is made of, what its properties are and the various applications for which it can be used. Read on.<\/p>\n

What sort of material is HPL?<\/h2>\n

HPL is a dimensionally stable material consisting of laminated layers of paper pulp and phenolic resin. By compressing these layers under high pressure and reinforcing the core with two top layers of melamine resin, a durable and extremely sturdy laminated surface is created. Phenolic resin and melamine resin are synthetic resins that ensure the HPL sheet is so hard and dense that moisture, heat, chemicals and even UV radiation have no effect on it. Although HPL consists largely of paper pulp, the material is classified as a plastic.<\/p>\n

The properties of HPL<\/h2>\n

As you have already read, HPL is exceptionally strong and hard. But High-Pressure Laminate is also scratch-resistant, wear-resistant and, as we have just mentioned, resistant to moisture, heat, chemicals and UV radiation. This means you can use HPL both indoors and outdoors. The material is also hygienic and easy to clean. Did you know, for example, that HPL is often used in areas such as kitchens, laboratories and even operating theatres? The high density of HPL ensures that it does not warp or become damaged easily, even with intensive use.<\/p>\n

What applications can I use HPL for?<\/h2>\n

Because HPL is so versatile, you might almost wonder what applications it cannot be used for. The sheet material is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Indoors, for example, it can be used in the food industry, public spaces, furniture and even worktops or table tops. How about an HPL table top, for instance? The only drawback of an HPL table top is that the solid material is very heavy, but otherwise we recommend using the sheet as a table top.<\/p>\n

Would you like to use HPL outdoors? If so, you could do this in the construction industry, for example. HPL is ideal for use as cladding because it does not retain dirt and is low-maintenance. What\u2019s more, HPL is available in a range of textures and colours, making it easy to adapt to the look and feel of your project. A good example of this is the Trespa Meteon HPL panels<\/a>. As well as being used for cladding, HPL is also widely used for fascia boards, balcony screens and advertising hoardings. Thanks to its weather-resistant properties, the material retains its appearance for many years without requiring intensive maintenance.<\/p>\n

Working with HPL<\/h2>\n

As well as being suitable for many applications, High Pressure Laminate is also easy to work with, despite its weight. At Kunststof Forte, you can also Custom-sized HPL sheets <\/a>Order. You can compare working with it to working with (hard)wood. Do you choose to screw or glue the sheet material? Then this is just as easy as with wood. Please note that HPL sheet material can shrink and expand when installed outdoors. A gap of approximately 10 mm can therefore make a big difference.<\/p>\n

Are you planning to use the sheet as a table top, for example, whether indoors or outdoors? If so, you may wish to secure it with fixing screws in the same colour, as otherwise they will stand out too much. Would you prefer not to use screws for assembly? In that case, using adhesive or sealant is a good alternative. Consider, for example, using polymer sealant. Polymer sealant provides a strong bond and remains stable, even when the sheet material shrinks or expands.<\/p>\n
